As part of FPCR’s involvement with the Bishop’s Stortford North project the practice provided an arboricultural assessment of the site and an assessment and future management of the veteran trees and woodland at Hoggate’s Wood and Ash Grove. These two areas comprise a large number of veteran or transitional veteran trees. The areas provide a distinctive habitat of bio-diversity interest and forms a key component of the new development’s green infrastructure strategy. Veteran trees provide a challenge in that their niche habitat and resource is so scarce that they too need to be preserved. At Bishop’s Stortford the management intention is to encourage regeneration of undergrowth around the base of some veteran trees that would normally be considered too hazardous for retention and attempt to deter the public from getting too close to these features.
