Architectural design and detailing of this energy recovery facility in the heart of Sheffield, a replacement for an ageing public waste incinerator. The 45m high building is in a prominent position on a very constricted site bounded by main roads, two railway lines and the Sheffield and Tinsley canal.

FPCR designed the external envelope within tight limits imposed by the internal arrangement of plant. This involved close collaboration with the local planning authority and the specialist plant contractor. Colours and textures of steel cladding and translucent panels were carefully chosen for their day time and night time appearance. The scheme is enhanced at night by the use of an artistic lighting scheme.

The facility powers the local district heating scheme and can provide up to 19MW of electricity to the National Grid.
