FPCR were appointed by Wates Construction to develop detailed landscape design proposals for Forest Fields Primary School as part of the expansion of the school and restoration of the Grade II listed Berridge Centre. FPCR worked closely with the client, the school and CPMG Architects to prepare and implement hard and soft landscaping plans for this challenging urban site.
Informed by guidance from CABE, Learning through Landscapes and Play England, the landscape proposals connect the different buildings on site and provide for a range of activities and uses including play, performance and outdoor learning. Central to the design was the creation of a much greener environment, which included extensive new tree and shrub planting and the use of natural materials such as timber and boulders. Long views towards Forest Fields itself along the central street were retained as an integral part of the scheme.
Following its successful completion in 2013, the scheme was awarded the Valerie Gillespie Award from the CPRE which recognises the best community initiative that enhances the environment. The project was also highly commended by the Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust for the consistency of the restoration and surrounding landscaping.
