FPCR developed the overall landscape design, which was fundamental in informing the architectural proposals for this challenging site. The scheme comprises a residential block of approximately 70 dwellings and responds sensitively to the site’s unique topographical constraints, while incorporating a historic Art Deco building that is regarded locally as a heritage asset.
The landscape design concept takes cues from the existing building design. The existing building includes original window frames typical of the architectural style. The composition of the window frames are taken as a starting point for the main courtyard created between the new and existing building and provides a formal element for the proposals. In addition to this larger semi-contained space the visual connection with the existing naturalistic form of the existing trees along the southern boundary provides an additional feature component for the landscape concept. The naturalistic component combines with the formal leading to an overall balance of the two helping to lead the landscape design. This combined form continues to flow and link with the other key landscape spaces at the new building entrance and revamped allotment space resulting in an interlinked landscape strategy.
An overall strategy for the site landscape was developed from the concept design to address the site constraints as well as providing new high quality proposals for use by the existing and future residents of the site. The key features of the strategy are set out within the strategy plan and include significant biodiversity improvements across the site with a variety of new planting selected for amenity and wildlife interest.
FPCR continue to work with the client on this challenging site to ensure the team reach a successful outcome.
