Fielding Johnson Building, Library Podium and Bike Park

FPCR provided landscape and urban design services for a series of key and connected entrances and spaces around the main campus at the University of Leicester.

This Landscape Institute award-winning project was undertaken in phases, combining the revitalisation of the surroundings to the historic Fielding Johnson building, the enhancement of the “Podium” space and the entrance to the Library, as well as the provision of a new underground bike park capable of accommodating over 300 cycles.

The resultant design proposals included an innovative approach to the accommodation of cycle parking on this scale within part of the campus, where available space is at a premium. The proposals adopted a mix of high quality granite paving, steps and walls, bespoke seating units, stainless steel and glass balustrades, complimentary lighting, box headed trees and other furniture. It has also managed to address demanding access requirements and level changes without compromising the open setting and approach to the Library entrance.

The cycle park entrance is set below the library entrance and is accessed via steps from two directions, with wheeling channels included to allow easy movement of cycles to and from the entrance. Inside the facility, hydraulic (lift-assisted) two-tier racks secure the majority of the bikes and maximise the overall capacity of the store.
