Byron House and Gill Street, NTU

FPCR developed the landscape design proposals from concept to detailed construction drawings for the complex scheme, and provided advice to the design and build contractor through the construction phase.
At Byron House, we worked with a multi-disciplinary team, including architects and engineers, to design both areas of public realm, and private rooftop gardens. The two linked roof terraces were designed as intensive green roofs, incorporating paving, balustrades, architectural planting, trees, seating areas and lighting. At ground level, high quality public realm and streetscape were designed, situated alongside the main tram route into the city centre. ‘Sandby Walk’ comprised areas of architectural planting and wide steps leading to student accommodation, with retaining walls clad with Cor-Ten steel. The ground level public realm also comprised of contemporary paving, surface drainage, tree planting, lighting and street furniture.
Adjacent student residence Gill Street comprised a courtyard on two levels, with cycle store and bin store on the lower level, covered by a green roof. The upper level included high quality paving, seating, lighting and soft landscaping.
