First annual monitoring reveals encouraging progress at Wychnor Meadows.

One year after the first phase of habitat creation began at Wychnor Meadows in Staffordshire, FPCR’s ecologists have completed the first annual monitoring surveys, revealing encouraging signs that the restoration is already taking hold.

Using a combination of detailed botanical and habitat surveys alongside drone-derived orthomosaic imagery, the team is building a long-term picture of how the site’s habitats are establishing and changing over time.

This monitoring programme will continue throughout the site’s 30-year management period, helping to guide habitat management, record ecological change and demonstrate the long-term success of the restoration.

Key findings: year 1

The first year’s findings show that green hay harvested from an existing lowland meadow has successfully introduced a range of meadow species to two restoration fields. Common knapweed, meadow vetchling, autumn hawkbit and green burnet have all been recorded, demonstrating that species-rich grassland is already beginning to establish.

While these are still in the early stages of restoration, the results indicate that green hay transfer is accelerating the development of species-rich grassland. Additional green hay transfers planned over the coming years are expected to further increase the diversity of the site. 

Elsewhere at Wychnor Meadows, yellow rattle has established successfully despite prolonged flooding following a wet winter. This important wildflower naturally supresses vigorous grasses, opening up the sward and creating the conditions for a wider range of wildflower species to establish over time.

Combining field surveys with drone technology

Alongside the field surveys, drone-derived orthomosaic imagery provides a highly detailed aerial record of the site, enabling ecologists to monitor habitat development across the landscape and compare changes year after year.

By combining ecological expertise with advanced survey technology, FPCR can track the success of habitat creation, identify areas requiring additional management and demonstrate the long-term value of habitat banking.

It’s fantastic to see good results so early in the project, with meadow species already establishing and evidence that the site is developing a well. While habitat creation is a long-term commitment, these early findings give us confidence that Wychnor Meadows is on course to deliver increasing biodiversity benefits for many years to come.”

The ambition for Wychnor Meadows is significant: transforming more than 50 hectares of land and significantly increasing its biodiversity value through the creation and enhancement of species-rich grassland and lowland meadow habitat.

As annual monitoring continues over the coming decades, FPCR will help ensure the site continues to develop into a thriving landscape that delivers lasting benefits for wildlife.
