The Medieval Bishops’ Palace in Lincoln supports colonies of Natterer’s bats, meaning that structural works to protect the historic floor and improve public access had to be carefully designed to avoid disturbance. FPCR identified key hibernation areas used by the bats to secure the necessary DEFRA licence and enable the works to proceed.

Working closely with the building team, FPCR helped shape the construction approach to avoid adverse impacts on the bat colonies. Mitigation measures were incorporated, including the provision of hibernation and roosting bat boxes, and FPCR continue to monitor the works throughout construction to ensure ongoing protection of the species.
