We’re really pleased to see planning approval granted for a 2,200-home community scheme in Arun District Council on land west of Bersted, West Sussex, supported by extensive employment space and social infrastructure — a project we’ve been involved with since 2016.
Our ecology team at FPCR carried out a full range of ecological surveys early on and kept this information up to date throughout the long planning process. From bats and birds to reptiles and riparian mammals, we helped the project team navigate the usual constraints, and more recently, supported the integration of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements into the design.
Working closely with the wider team, we ensured the development avoided or reduced any significant ecological impacts, while also creating real benefits for local wildlife. Through careful planning and collaboration, we built in substantial enhancements — so the scheme doesn’t just meet policy, but actively improves biodiversity on the ground. We also made sure the green infrastructure offers good quality recreational space for both new and existing residents.
A big part of the process involved regular liaison with Natural England and Arun District Council, particularly in relation to sensitive nearby sites like Pagham Harbour SPA, SAC, and Ramsar. Together, we agreed on practical mitigation measures to protect these areas. It’s fantastic to see the hard work of the FPCR team and all involved recognised with a successful outcome — proof that good ecology and good development can go hand in hand.
