ENERGY RECOVERY FACILITY
This new 40m high facility will replace an existing ageing public waste incinerator, disposing of 225,000 tonnes of household waste per annum and providing energy for the local district heating scheme. The building is in a very prominent position on a very constricted industrial site, bounded by main roads, two railway lines and the Sheffield & Tinsley canal. The facility will re-use the existing 76m high stack.
FPCR developed the external architectural design within close limits imposed by the rigid internal arrangement of the specialist plant. The external form of the component parts reflects the internal operational functions. Colours and textures of steel cladding and translucent panels were carefully chosen and the scheme will be enhanced at night by the use of an artistic lighting scheme. |
